
Niki Lauda, world Champion of Formula 1 in 1975, 1977 and 1984, is in "extremely serious" state, according to the Austrian news agency APA, after having undergone a lung transplant due to an infection.
"Due to a severe pulmonary condition, Niki Lauda had to undergo a lung transplant today (Thursday). The transplant was successfully carried out, said Fuentes from the Vienna General Hospital, where the procedure was performed.
Lauda, aged 69, had to abruptly leave his vacation spot in Ibiza (Spain) last week to be hospitalized in Vienna after having contracted a pulmonary virus, according to the Austrian newspaper Österreich.
The former pilot, non-executive president of the Mercedes team, is also an active man in the field of the air transport company.
F1 World Champion in 1975, Niki Lauda survived a serious race accident in August 1976 on Nürburgring during the German Grand Prix. Then he returned to proclaim himself world champion in 1977 and 1984. The toxic fumes breathed in the accident, with their monoplace in flames, affected their lungs.
Lauda had already done two kidney transplants, one in 1997 and another in 2015. In the latter he received the donation of his girlfriend, Birgit, with whom he later married.
